Sociology is a science. Sociologists don’t use beakers and test tubes, but like natural scientists, they do seek to learn about the world by creating theories and testing them with systematic observations.

What Will Students Learn While Studying Sociology? Sociology encompasses many areas of science, so a bachelor’s degree will help students to know of these different areas. Learning about social class, change, and structure are large parts of sociology. Ultimately students will learn to look at the world through the eyes of a sociologist, in terms of objectively seeing groups and individuals and how parts affect the whole.

Students will have the opportunity to gain experience through an internship during their bachelor’s degree. Whether or not an internship is required depends on the specific program you are participating in. Study abroad programs offering coursework in sociology are also available to students who are pursuing a four year degree. This can provide exposure to another country, making you even more worldly, which will bolster the major.

Bachelor degrees provided by online sociology colleges require studies of general Liberal Arts courses, as well as concentrations in the study of social theory and social research methodologies.

Students may choose concentrations in psychology, criminology, or education in their online sociology programs of study to prepare for positions in clinical, educational, industrial, and law enforcement settings.

You don’t need to agree with all of those arguments – I certainly don’t – to study sociology, but you do need to be willing to consider arguments that you don’t agree with. If you don’t agree with one or more of those statements, why don’t you? Each of the statements above makes an empirical argument.

Sociology majors could choose to continue their education at the graduate level, work to attain teaching credentials, or work as a counselor or in nonprofit organizations. Working in a correctional facility or in human resources is also an option. People with sociology degrees have also found work in the criminal justice system or conducting research. There are so many potential paths to take once you graduate with your bachelor’s degree in sociology.
